Saturday, July 12, 2008 Vice mayor explains why Baguio not listed as top-performer
BAGUIO is a unique case, reason why it failed to be included in the list of top performing cities in a survey done by the Asian Institute of Management (AIM).
Vice Mayor Daniel Fariñas said the city failed in terms of land requirement. He said not all lands in Baguio are open for development because the environment also has to be considered.
He said so much development would mean sacrificing the pine trees that Baguio is famous for.
Fariñas said Baguio's terrain also affects building construction. With a rugged terrain, he said construction would require more expense for businessmen for this entails adjusting floor and building plans.
Last July 4, the AIM released the list of top-performing cities in terms of business competitiveness. Baguio was not included as a top-performing city.
For metro cities, the list includes Davao, Lapu-Lapu, Makati, Manila, Marikina and Makati. For mid-sized cities: Cabanatuan, General Santos, Lucena, Olongapo, San Pablo, Tagum and Tarlac; and for small-sized cities: Bayawan, Calapan, Calbayog, Dagupan, Dipolog, Laoag, Malaybalay, Naga, San Fernando (La Union), Surigao, Tagbilaran and Tuguegarao.
