Monday, July 28, 2008 Carless Sundays get mixed reaction in city
THE initial implementation of the carless Sunday generated a variety of reactions.
For motorists, traffic congestion was the common complaint, but Baguio Vice Mayor Daniel Fariñas said pedestrianization is still on experiment basis and will be amended if the continued implementation results to further traffic congestion.
Fariñas, however, said carless Sunday also aims at reducing fuel consumption by promoting walking.
He said this is also one way of assisting businessmen at Session Road, who have been complaining that since SM started operating, sales went down because many prefer buying in stores at the giant mall.
The mayor earlier issued an administrative order that closes a portion of Session Road for pedestrian use. He said the plan is in consonance with the city's project of "Walk, Baguio, Walk" an advocacy that promotes walking as alternative to reducing smoke emission.
Session Road is identified as one of the city's busiest streets. (RO)
