Wednesday, August 06, 2008 Guv to Baguio: Suspend ban on 6-wheelers
BENGUET Governor Nestor Fongwan asked the Baguio City Government to suspend the implementation of an ordinance banning six-wheel trucks from passing Kennon Road, pending the clarification of some "vague" provisions in the ordinance.
"We need to be clarified if the ban on six-wheeler trucks covers even those which have a gross weight of less than 16,880 kilos," Fongwan said.
The governor wrote to Mayor Reinaldo Bautista Jr. asking if the ban applies to all six-wheelers regardless of weight.
Vegetable truckers have complained of apprehensions, which started on Tuesday last week. Around 60 six-wheel trucks were apprehended since then.
Truckers prefer Kennon Road when delivering agricultural commodities to Metro Manila and other lowland provinces since it is the shortest route to reach these places.
City Ordinance 43-2008 bans vehicles weighing 16,880 kilos from plying Kennon Road. The ban includes six-wheel trucks, and is part of the effort to preserve the national road as among the city's historical sites.
Fongwan asked the City Government to suspend the ban on six-wheel trucks while the weight aspect is clarified.
He said not all six-wheelers could reach a weight of 16,880 kilos. "These would not even reach 10,000 kilos," he said. (JC)
