Monday, August 11, 2008 RDC wants energy-saving part of curriculum By Rimaliza Opiña
THE Philippines has a wide source of where to generate power, but this too can be depleted and should be preserved.
This was the statement made by officials of the Department of Energy (DOE) during its members' recent visit here. Hence, the development councils in the country are pushing for a mass campaign on energy conservation.
Here in the Cordillera, the Regional Development Council (RDC) suggested an information campaign on energy conservation be made part the curriculum in schools.
Issues on climate change, clean air and use of renewable energy may be added to the curriculum to broaden the scope of the information and education campaign (IEC).
RDC chairman Juan Ngalob also suggested the IEC be done in barangays with the assistance of the academe, private sector and line agencies.
Ngalob also asked the DOE to establish a regional office in the Cordillera, as the responsibility on public information has been lodged with the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda), where he is the regional director.
DOE Assistant Secretary for Policy, Plans and Programs Annette Rafael said setting up regional offices of the DOE is part of her plan.
This however, will start in the super regions.
Executives of the DOE were in Baguio last Thursday for a public consultation on the 2008-2030 Philippine Energy Plans.
