Monday, August 18, 2008 BMRP 1 notches 1st win against JVG By Roderick Osis
FORMER BCU stalwart Robert Collado led a third-quarter run together with Roy Lopez lifting BMRP 1 to score their first win against the Larry Santos-led JVG Dental Masters, 97-89 in the ongoing Baguio Centennial Cup, Sunday afternoon.
BMRP 1 poured in 30 points in the third quarter after a 7-0 run led by Collado and Lopez, to overhaul a three-point lead by the dental masters at the end of the first half.
The win puts BMRP 1 in the win column after bowing out to Beneco in their opening game to record a 1-1 win-loss card tying them with Tea House which lost by a point to the SLU All-Stars, which registered its first win in the tournament.
Both teams were exchanging baskets in the early minutes of the first quarter with JVG leading by only three in the opening period with 2:54 left. However,
BMRP 1 converted their successive possession to lead at the end of the quarter, 21-17.
The dental masters then relied on Santos and Jerry Rigos to outscore the Trinidad-based dribblers, 17-12 in seizing the lead with 2:40 left in the first half, 36-30. JVG controlled the remaining minutes to lead by three at the end of the period, 43-46.
Collado and Lopez then teamed up with Elmer Lipang to break a 50-all deadlock with 7:25 remaining in the third quarter then pulled an 18-5 run catapulted by the trio to lead by 13 with 1:34 left in the third period, 68-55.
What seems to be a blowout turned out to be a hotly contested ball game after the dental masters narrowed the lead by four 92-87 with 1:11 left in the game.
But Collado turned JVG's effort to naught converting two free throws to put the La Trinidad-based ballers by six to put the dental masters at bay with 59:6 left in the closing period.
Earlier, BMRP 3 also barged into the win column of the Bracket E after edging out Hardcore 93-77 at the Coyeesan Sports Center.
BMRP 3 controlled the ball game at the start of the first quarter with an 11-point lead at the end of the first quarter, 23 -12.
BMRP 3 then employed their run and gun game to lead by as much as 20 points, 58-38, 5:00 minutes left in the third period.
Hardcore then narrowed the lead by nine at the end of the quarter, 67-58, but BMRP imposed their might after a 10-2 spurt in the payoff period.
