Wednesday, August 20, 2008 Tuba not against city's revised charter
TUBA Mayor Florencio Bentrez stressed anew that the local government is not opposing the revised charter of Baguio City, which was earlier feared to encroach on some areas of surrounding Benguet towns.
Bentrez said the revised charter filed by Baguio Representative Mauricio Domogan has not in any way encroached on the areas of nearby towns like Tuba.
"We do not object to the (revised) city charter," Bentrez said.
Earlier, officials of Benguet raised an alarm over the city charter revision, which is pending before the House of Representatives, on apprehension that the new charter increased Baguio's land area at the expense of neighboring municipalities.
Tuba was cited as among the areas of concern because of the boundary conflict existing between the town and the city. Tuba is beset with numerous boundary disputes, including those with Itogon and localities in other provinces like La Union and Pangasinan.
Municipal officials were earlier questioned by the Provincial Board for their failure to apprise the provincial body concerning the deliberations on the city's charter that they attended.
The office of Domogan clarified the city's land area has not increased. Benguet Representative Samuel Dangwa also assured that his office would not allow any portion of the province to be intruded upon. (JC)
