Wednesday, September 03, 2008 Public invited to submit researches on city's history, heritage
WHAT is there for Baguio after it celebrates its centennial next year is something worth looking into -- not only people organizing the celebration but all affected by the city's transformation into an urban center.
Heeding this, the University of the Philippines (UP)-Baguio through the Cordillera Studies Center is inviting the public to submit researches, which will be discussed in a plenary during the Baguio Centennial Conference, scheduled on March 2009.
Suggested topics for the conference include the displacement of Ibalois, Baguio as "Seat of Imperium," Urban development after architect Daniel Burnham, migration and Baguio as a multi-ethnic city, ecology and environmental issues, the issue of urban blight, governance and public policy issues, economic transformations, Baguio as imagined art, literature and pop culture, tourism and Baguio's status as summer capital, the indigenous in contemporary Baguio and Baguio and its future.
"Baguio is bursting at the seams," is how many would describe this mountain resort city, but to address this concern, the Baguio Centennial Conference said in its concept paper that the call for the submission of proposals aims at providing a venue for the telling of multiple narratives on the history of Baguio, reexamining the city's history as a hill station, address the issues confronting Baguio as a city and identify prospects for development.
For interested individuals, proposals should contain not more than 300 words and be accompanied by the author's biodata and contact details. For panels, proposal should not be more than three pages, a panel abstract of not more than 200 words. Deadline is on September 30.
Proposals can be sent as email attachment in MS Word format to csc@upb.edu.ph or by snail mail to The Organizing Committee, Baguio Centennial Conference, Cordillera Studies Center, and University of the Philippines-Baguio.
Notice of acceptance of proposals will be on October 15. For more details visit www.upb.edu.ph/~csc. (RO)
