CRIME prevention would not work well without the cooperation of the public.
As the police observe crime prevention week, La Trinidad Municipal Police Chief Glen Lonogan sought the active participation of the public in reporting and thwarting the occurrence of crimes.
"As we observe crime prevention week, we urge the public to help us because crime prevention is not the sole responsibility of the police," Lonogan said.
The regional police led the opening program for the national crime prevention week at the La Trinidad grounds on Tuesday.
Crime prevention entails a proactive strategy in deterring the occurrence of crimes, he said.
The program was highlighted by the nationwide simultaneous blowing of police whistles, which lasted for five minutes.
Lonogan said the whistle blowing signifies the unity of the public against crime. This was participated in not only by the men in uniform but also the students, local officials, representatives from the senior citizens groups and other government agencies.
In La Trinidad, Lonogan is one with the advocates on the imposition of stiffer penalties against the violators of the town's liquor ban ordinance.
Officials are seeking the amendment of the liquor ordinance to include the liquor store customers in the imposition of fines aside from the establishment owners.
This is because majority of the crimes, particularly physical injuries, committed in the municipality are caused by drunkenness. (JC)
