Young environmentalist wins car in raffle

A COLLEGE student who is currently out-of-school and is learning to drive, won the Toyota Vios grand prize, in the recently concluded raffle draw initiated by the Baguio Regreening Movement (BRM), the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) and the Regional Multi-tripartite Environment and Natural Resources Protection Committee (RMENRPC), last August 31.

"I am so happy, this really is a gift from God," Jayson Eserio said after winning the car. Eserio, 19, is a college student who has not enrolled this semester because he was late according to his father, a taxi driver.

Jayson was learning how to drive and was in the process of applying for his license when he was offered by an employee of the Land Transportation Office to buy a ticket for the fundraising activity of the BRM, PNRC and RMENRPC.

He bought only one ticket without any thought of winning. But as good luck was by his side, Jayson not only won the top prize, he also contributed to the improvement of Baguio's environs.

The project was launched in May 2008 by the BRM in coordination with the RMENPC and the PNRC. The two other major prizes include a motorcycle for the second prize and computer set for the third prize. The fourth prize was a seven cubic refrigerator, the fifth prize was a 21-inch television with DVD player, the sixth prize was a washing machine and 10 consolation prizes of P2,000 each.

Aside from Jayson, the prize winners were: Florencio Tamayo, Redentor Licuan, W.E. Saguidec, Ben Tan, Edna Labiaga, Josefina Duyan, Antonio Maramba, Elmer Paggas, Rosemarie Gonzales and Cyril Valenciano.

A mass officiated by Bishop Carlito Cenzon himself, an environmental activist and supporter, was conducted prior to the draw.

The draw, which was aimed to support the various projects of organizers for the cause of a better, greener and healthier environment for Baguio, gained the support of Baguio residents and those from nearby provinces. (Press release)
