The phyto-sanitary clearance for the importation of the new potato type is already approved by the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI), Benguet Governor Nestor Fongwan said.
He added that the experimental propagation of the variety would be made by the Provincial Government over a five-hectare lot at the BPI property at Lam-ayan Buguias.
The experimentation and eventual mass propagation of the new variety, imported from Brunswick, Canada, would last up to 2018.
Aside from the propagation of imported potato varieties, farmers in the province were also introduced to varieties suited for organic farming.
The production of organic potato variety was initiated by the Benguet State University (BSU) through the Research and Development Division. This was done through participatory research where farmers were involved in the experiment. (JC)
