Tuesday, September 09, 2008 Youth join centennial countdown
WHERE is the younger generation while the city is busy preparing for the centennial next year?
They were not exactly absent but their participation to any major event has not been heard of, until Monday when the VGA foundation headed by youth awardee Dr. Ryan Guinaran, announced that the youth in Baguio will be participating in the events for the centennial.
The group is sponsoring the awarding for the search for the outstanding youth organizations. The group also aims to organize the first Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) youth assembly here in Baguio. The assembly will center on the centennial's theme "fostering a culture of caring."
As initial offering, the group is sponsoring a band competition in the morning of September 28 and a 30-minute documentary on the history of the country's liberation from Japanese forces during World War II at the Baguio Convention Center.
The documentary is the product of months of research, which will show the untold story of the city's liberation.
Stressing that World War II in Asia practically ended in Baguio with the surrender of General Tomoyoki Yamashita in Kiangan, Ifugao before he was brought to Baguio for the signing of his surrender documents, the researchers said there are however stories that have not been told regarding this important part of history.
"Knowing these facts however, is not enough. The story of the battles our grandfathers fought between these fateful years of Japanese occupation remain undocumented and so they remain less remembered," the VGA said in a statement. (RO)
