Cepmo trims down landfill proposals to 9
By Rimaliza Opiña

THE waste disposal problem of Baguio brought 34 proposals for sites where a sanitary landfill (SLF) may be put up.

But as the technical working group (TWG) is done assessing the most feasible sites, the list has been trimmed down to nine. The list has been submitted to the city solid waste board (SWB) for their comment.

Cordelia Lacsamana, officer-in-charge of the City Environment and Parks Management Office (Cepmo), said all nine were assessed based on the basic qualifications of the TWG. These include the presence of land titles, meeting the minimum land area requirement of 22 hectares and travel time from Baguio not exceeding one hour.

Lacsamana declined to identify the sites, pending comments from the SWB.

Meanwhile, the Cepmo aims that before the year ends, the P15-million residual containment area (RCA) will be developed. Assessment of the two sites for the RCA was also submitted to the SWB for comments and additional recommendations.

Earlier, initial assessment gave preference to a property in Virac, Itogon, Benguet, rather than the government-housing site also in Irisan.

Development of an RCA is to discontinue hauling of garbage outside of Baguio.

Instead of leasing the Virac site, Lacsamana said the TWG will recommend that the property be purchased. The RCA, which measures two hectares, forms part of the site eyed for an SLF.

The TWG will also recommend for the creation of a negotiating panel for the purchase of a landfill.
