Friday, September 19, 2008 No snow show in Burnham By Rimaliza Opiña
THERE will be no snow show in Baguio after all.
Months after he sat as acting mayor, now Mayor Reinaldo Bautista Jr. said new attractions are needed to make Baguio more appealing to tourists. He then brought out the idea of installing snowmaking machines in downtown Session Road or Burnham Park.
On December 2007, an amusement park operator proposed to install a snowmaking machine at Burnham.
But as early as March, the City Environment and Parks Management Office (Cepmo) denied the plan, saying this does not conform to the nature-based theme, as contained in the master development plan of Burnham.
The proposal was referred to the committee on laws, which recommended its denial, using as basis the recommendation of the Cepmo. The Council has yet to discuss the recommendation.
The plan to have snow in Baguio -- and in a tropically warm country at that -- generated various reactions. Some said the idea was not possible because the cool temperature here is not enough to produce snow, while some welcomed the idea, claiming this might boost tourism.
But with the Cepmo's rejection, a snow-show in Baguio might remain a dream.
