DA distributes seeds for food security

THE vegetable seeds distributed to households in the region were meant to produce food for the beneficiaries, reason why the Department of Agriculture (DA) procured seeds that are good for food production.

DA Regional Director Cesar Rodriguez said the seeds were meant mainly to produce foods for the beneficiaries and not for commercial purposes.

He said the seeds were meant to improve the nutritional status of families in the region.

"The seeds that we procured were based on their nutritional values, as recommended by the National Nutrition Council," Rodriguez said.

Among the seeds distributed to households included carrots, eggplant, okra, pechay, cucumber, ampalaya and squash.

Households who have surplus production on the seeds planted were given the discretion to sell their extra produce to augment their income.

The Cordillera is one of the regions identified as most malnourished in the country.

The seed distribution is part of the hunger mitigation program of the government, funded under the Programang Agrikultura Para sa Masa.

The program earned criticisms recently on allegation of scams, an accusation vehemently denied by DA officials. (JC)
