THE RP-Cebuana Lhuillier softball team humbled their local counterparts in an exhibition game last weekend after conducting a two-day seminar in Baguio City to promote slo-pitch softball in the city.
About 108 players including coaches from the elementary, high school, and tertiary levels attended the free training at the Baguio Melvin Jones Grandstand.
In their first game, the international campaigner Blu Boys humbled the YLAD team with a 17-8, 7th winning score then pulled another win against La Trinidad Royals, 16-3, then trounced the Cresencia Village Barangay Batters en route to a 16-1 win.
The Blu Boys completed a sweep of the local slo-pitch teams after beating a selection of the three team, which played them the whole day, 13-3.
The RP-Cebuana Lhuillier softball team recently competed and placed third in the Ninth Asia Cup International Slow Pitch Softball Tournament held on September 20 to 21 in Taipei, Taiwan.
The team had the best of the country's softball players to represent the country, namely: Venerando Lopez Dizer, Ronald Anthony Sangil, Davy Lan Joseph Aguelo Perez, Julius Ceasar Morales Visaya, Isidro Pedroza Abello, Jeffry Espinosa Hardillo, Romeo Rumbaua Bumagat, Apolonio Umali Rosales, Manolito Constantino Binarao, Ulysses Maningo Mejia, Oscar Regaladi Bradshaw IV, Mark Rae Teves Ramirez, Anthony Perillo Santos, Jasper Bacarisas Cabrera, and Ben Tumolak Maravilles.
Jano Cardenas, Sports Coordinator for Softball in the Centennial Commission said the training was free-of-charge and will include basic skills in the game including officiating and coaching.
"This is to bring back the glory days of softball in the city," Cardenas said.
"This is part of our program to promote slo-pitch softball in the countryside as presently, it is only played regularly in Metro Manila and we need to introduce it to more and more people if we want to see the sport grow," Cardenas continued.
Cardenas said the main goals of the event were to give each player individual instruction and to enable the players to showcase their talents. The one-day clinic was divided between into hitting and defensive drills for players.
Several softball equipment were also handed out to participants who excelled during the two day clinic, according to Cardenas.
The clinic, including the four exhibition matches, was sponsored by the Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines (Asaphil) through its president, Jean Henri Lhuillier, in cooperation with the Baguio Centennial Commission.
