Jaguar volleybelles cops BBEAL title

THE University of the Cordilleras (UC) Lady Jaguars went to Cindy Benitez, Jhiesel Agudia and Michelle Remo to cap its fourth women's volleyball title in the Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League (BBEAL) at the jam-packed UC gymnasiums.

Playing before their green-clad supporters, the Lady Jaguars swept it in two games against erstwhile rival Saint Louis University (SLU) Lady Navigators in four sets, 25-14, 21-25, 25-17, 25-15 in 87 minutes of play-in.

"We just relaxed a bit in the second set, Coach Yul Benosa said after the game.

"But I told them to regroup in the next set so the team's confidence resurfaced," Benosa added, who was a former University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Tiger in the mid-90s and former member of the RP Youth team.

"The team really worked very hard to be win the championship," Benosa added, who is also the schools' athletic director.

Benitez unloaded 19 points practically putting SLU's defense in shambles with her power hits which either pierced through the middle or which the Lady Navigators simply just failed to return.

"We just followed what coach said, to play well," Benitez said, a fourth year Tourism student.

Agudia and Remo were also unstoppable above the net dishing 11 and 13 points, respectively.

"Our teamwork was good so we overcame their win in the second set," Agudia, a BS IT student said of their performance against the Navigators.

It was the Lady Jaguars' solid net defense and superb court coverage which carried them through, particularly in the last two sets which capped their four-set win to clinch the victory.

With their defense holding, the Jaguars also proved to have a deeper bench as Benitez, Agudia, Remo, Kristine Foronda, Michelle Osway, and Clarissa Tolentino outscored their SLU counterparts. (R.Osis)
