Thursday, October 09, 2008 Beneco junks underground wiring for Baguio By Rimaliza Opiña
THE Benguet Electric Cooperative (Beneco) will not pursue earlier plans of adopting an underground wiring system even in select parts of Baguio.
An underground wiring system requires an intricate system of connecting wires and doing this in selected areas will be more expensive, said General Manager Gerardo Verzosa.
Due to the series of power interruptions which occurred as a result of vehicular accidents at Bokawkan, plans on utilizing an underground wiring system was renewed.
In an April 2008 interview, Sun.Star reported Beneco's plan of venturing into an underground wiring system at least at Bokawkan, Marcos Highway and Naguilian Road.
An underground wiring system is more ideal because it rids the skyline of unsightly "spaghetti wires" and minimizes the possibility of illegal tapping.
Magsaysay Avenue is host to a large number of businesses like hotels, schools, grocery stores, bars, convenience stores, and shops.
Two circuits are connected to the Bokawkan post. Accidents emanating from the area result to power outages for 50 percent of the central business district.
An underground wiring system costs 10 times more than overhead or the conventional wiring.
