Wednesday, October 15, 2008 Domogan: Impeach raps vs PGMA a political ploy
THE recently-filed impeachment complaint against the President is a ploy to further the political ambition of some, said Baguio Representative Mauricio Domogan.
A party-mate of the President, Domogan however admitted the possibility that some may vote for the impeachment to protect their own political interest. "It is more of politics than the merits of the case."
Even assuming the complaint has basis, Domogan said it will take time before the House committee tasked to investigate on the complaint concludes its own investigation. By then, he said the President's term is about to end.
Transmitting the complaint to the Senate, and for the Senate to constitute itself into a body which will hear the complaint and the hearing proper itself will also take time, the lawmaker added.
"The impeachment will eat up the time of the House and the Senate," Domogan said.
Other than this, Domogan said the fourth attempt at impeaching the President will also have serious repercussions especially in terms of the country's image overseas.
On Monday morning, critics of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo filed another impeachment complaint for alleged corruption, manipulation of votes and other crimes.
Jose de Venecia, son of former Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. is the principal complainant in this case.
The complaint stemmed from previous allegations that the President rigged the 2004 elections and corruption in the nationwide broadband project with the Chinese company ZTE Corp. (RO)
