Saturday, October 18, 2008 Buyagan cemetery 'overpopulated'
BUYAGAN cemetery is no longer fit as a burial ground as a report on the status of the cemetery has already exceeded its carrying capacity.
"There are no available lots or plots to be used as burial grounds," according to administrative assistant Nestor Epi to La Trinidad Mayor Artemio Galwan.
In his report, Epi said there are available lots within the cemetery, but these are reserved by some private individuals who refuse these available spaces for public use.
Due to lack of space, some have already built tombs over the existing ones, a practice which is not yet legally allowed by the local government.
"The cemetery is not enclosed and as such there are people who surreptitiously build tombs over existing ones during the wee hours in the morning," the report said.
To remedy, Epi advised the municipal burial ground be closed or if not, for the Municipal Government to require the construction of condominium type of tombs to accommodate bodies.
Epi suggested perimeter fences must be built around the burial ground to prevent the stealthy construction of tombs. (JC)
