Friday, October 24, 2008 Itogon councilor asks city to clarify ESL plans
AFTER being identified as one of the areas for the establishment of a sanitary landfill by the city government, Itogon is left wondering what has happened to the city's plan.
Itogon Councilor Oscar Camantiles would move at the Municipal Council to invite representatives from the city to update the local government on what has happened with the proposal to set up an engineered sanitary landfill in the town.
"We want to invite the city to clarify what really is their plan for Itogon," Camantiles said, adding reports have reached the municipality that should the plan be approved, the identified site in Itogon would not be used as a sanitary landfill but would merely serve as a "temporary holding facility."
Barangay Virac was one of the first areas pinpointed as a site for the establishment of a sanitary landfill for the city.
A private landowner offered his property for the city's proposal.
Recently though residents in the area affected by the proposed site for a temporary waste disposal facility signified their objection to the establishment of the garbage facility in their area.
Residents said the area does not conform to the conditions required by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in the put-up of a sanitary landfill.
The City Government is having a hard time locating an area to establish its own sanitary landfill. Aside from Itogon, Tuba is also being considered as site for a landfill.
