Friday, October 24, 2008 Baguio SK Fed launches ladies volleyball tilt By Ernie N. Olson Jr.
THE Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation of Baguio recently launched its city-wide ladies volleyball tournament at the PFVR Gym.
While the games would be held in various venues every few days, the first set of games from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on October 25 will still be held at the same venue.
"The SKF Ladies Volleyball Tournament aims to provide an opportunity for lady volleyball players aged 15 to 18 from various barangays and districts the chance to develop their athletic skills," said Baguio SK Federation president and Councilor Gloria Ysabel de Vera.
Councilor Elaine Sembrano graced the opening ceremony. He commended the city's SK Federation for coming up with such programs to further enhance the sports skills of the youth.
On the other hand, de Vera said it was the intention of the SK Federation to develop such sports skills starting from the grassroots level -- the barangays -- to introduce such sports to budding athletes with the hope they can develop further.
She added these activities also intend to promote camaraderie and sportsmanship among the youth.
During the opening program, a short briefing was conducted by the officiating committee from Department of Education Basketball Referees Association (Debra) to further orient the young players on the mechanics and rules of the game.
A ceremonial service was then performed by Sembrano and de Vera before the games officially started.
Playing against each other at the PFVR Gym starting 8 a.m. this Saturday will be District 1 versus District 10, District 6 versus District 7, District 14 versus District 19, District 5 versus District 12, District 10 versus District 13, District 1 versus District 16, District 10 versus District 14, and District 6 versus District 9.
On October 29, the games will be played from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Engineers' Hill barangay covered court.
Scheduled to play then are the SK volleyball teams of District 1 versus District 13, District 5 versus District 7, District 16 versus District 19, District 13 versus District 14, and District 6 versus District 10.
