Thursday, December 25, 2008 Editorial: Christmas means hope reborn
THE story of Christmas is as relevant today as it was 2000 years ago.
A forlorn Family in search of a place to rest in an unfamiliar and seemingly hostile town. All hope seemingly lost as the Family desperately search and finding no place to bear their first Child.
And then the Baby was born in the humblest of settings.
But the contradiction is that when all seemed lost, hope was suddenly rekindled in that little Babe in the manger.
There is a lot of parallel as we celebrate the birth of the Savior of the entire Christian world. How many overseas Filipino workers' families do we hear these days of losing their precious jobs and coming home virtually penniless? How many families will celebrate the birth of Christ today without roofs over their heads?
How many of our fellow humans will awake on Dec. 25 with fear in their eyes and hearts because of conflict and lawlessness?
How can we make merry at this time of worldwide economic chaos and uncertainty?
But like the contradiction in the story of the Nativity, hope is reborn every Christmas. Hope for a better life in the future is rekindled as we mark the birth of Christ. Because Hope is exactly the message of Jesus' birth - Hope of our redemption.
No mortal event can overshadow this simple fact - Christ was born to take away all our worries and cares and lead to us to eternal salvation. Let us not forget this as we take part in whatever festivity we will join today and tomorrow - be it Spartan or lavish.
The entire Sun.Star Baguio family joins the whole Christian world in welcoming our Savior into the world. A blessed Christmas to one and all!
