Thursday, December 25, 2008 Razors too sharp for Batters By Roderick Osis
LA TRINIDAD based Razors scored a homerun and three base hits in the fifth inning to seal their victory against Cresencia Village Barangay Batters, 12-8, in the first Baguio-Benguet Slopitch Softball Tournament at the Baguio Melvin Jones grandstand Sunday afternoon.
CVB Batters started the top of the first inning with a homerun which took them the drivers seat but the razors scored four base hits to even the contest at 4 all at the end of the second inning.
The first Baguio Slopitch Softball tournament comes off the wraps, which saw six teams since last month in the 10-day twice a week tournament.
Organized by the Baguio City Batted Balls Club, the tournament aims to bring back the glory days of softball in the city.
"This is part of our program to promote slo-pitch softball in the countryside as presently, it is only played regularly in Metro Manila and we need to introduce it to more and more people if we want to see the sport grow," Jano Cardenas, Sports Coordinator for Softball in the Centennial Commission said.
The LA Trinidad based Razors took another scoring binge by racking up two more homers and two base hits to pull the lead, 7 -8 at the close of the third inning.
The Baguio based Batters on the other hand tied the ball game at the opening of the fourth inning with one base hit to tie the ball game on an 8-8 count, then foiled another upsurge by the Razors in the bottom of the fourth.
The CVB batters then failed to gain a base hit at the top of the fifth, while the Razors perfectly scored a base hit at a time to grab the lead, 12-8. In the 6th and final inning, CVB was unable to convert a base hit.
In the battle for third, The La Trinidad Royals did not mind the extra fifth inning scoring a homerun to upend YLAD, 13 - 12 wich was held earlier also at the Melvin Jones Grandstand.
Six teams from Baguio City and Benguet with Alpine, Cresencia Village Barangay (CVB) batters, Royals, Razors, YLAD and SLU joining the 10-day tournament with the top four teams advancing to the semifinals while the first two top teams will enjoy a twice to beat advantage.
