She said the country was lucky it did not succumb to the negative impacts of the global economic crisis.

"The year 2008 was tumultuous for the world due to the global economic recession that, thankfully, has not become a crisis in the Philippines," the President said in her New Year Message.

"I hope we can all work together as a global community to weather theses storms," the President's message added.

Arroyo also prayed for tranquility and collaborative work to achieve greater peace and stability in the country.

"Here at home, I hope the efforts we are making to eliminate poverty and to improve the lives of our people will continue to bear fruit and these efforts will pave the way for the creation of a more prosperous Philippines," the President said.

Financial experts regard 2008 as among the worst for the financial system. Last year, they claim, is a year they want to forget. (JC)
