Monday, January 05, 2009 No P900K for Baguio Athletes By Roderick Osis
ONLY P402,000 worth of incentives will be given to Baguio athletes who won medals in the recently 3rd Philippine Olympic Festival and not P900,000 as earlier reported.
City Sports Coordinator Edison Villafuerte said the release of the incentives for the athletes has yet to be released by the City Government because of the long vacation.
Baguio City Mayor Reinaldo Baustista earlier promised a total of P900,000 for those athletes who excelled in the sporting event, but Villafuerte said the computation only reached P402,000.
At the same time, Villafuerte said their office has yet to coordinate with the local finance committee for the availability of the funds.
"We hope that when the local finance committee meets next week, the budget would be immediately approved so that we can release the money for our athletes," Villafuerte said.
A bulk of the P402,000 will be given to gold medalist athletes amounting P3,000 each while coaches will get P2,000. Silver medallists, on the other hand, will get P2,000 while their coaches will earn P1,500 and bronze medalists will earn P1,000 and P800 for coaches.
Baguio delegates romped to fourth place over-all after bagging 38 gold, 40 silver, and 40 bronze medals.
