Beach volley slated

BEACH volleyball in the mountains? Why Not.

Beach volleyball invitational is currently being worked out by Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF) - Cordillera chapter to usher during the city's celebration of the annual Flower Festival.

Dubbed as the 1st Baguio Beach Volleyball Invitational Tournament - Panagbenga Cup, PVF Cordillera chapter president Yul Benosa said that despite the mountainous terrain of the city, Baguio could be a perfect venue for the sport because of its climate.

PVF Cordillera is set to bring 20 teams in the high school category and another 20 in the college level which will battle it out for the top purse.

The teams will be composed of male and female categories," Benosa said.

Top teams from Manila, including Baguio City and nearby northern Luzon schools are set to join the weeklong tournament, which is being set on the third week of February.

Benosa said they are currently working out with the City Government for a permanent beach volleyball court inside the athletic bowl to be part of the major renovation of the sports complex.

The city is set to release some P125 million needed for the full rehabilitation of the city's sports complex.

At least P50 million needs to be released immediately for the improvement of the basketball, volleyball, and sepak takraw courts including the main bleachers, which have already been dilapidated.

Benosa added that a separate bleacher will also be built alongside the beach volleyball court that will be constructed near the swimming pool area of the sports complex.

The UC athletic director on the other hand said he hopes to stage another event in May as part of its continuous program to promote the sport even in the highlands. (RO)
