Stude jumps 20 ft from window of schoolbuilding

AN ENGLISH teacher at the Opol National High School offered one student two choices: either take off his clothes or jump out the window.

And the student, whose name is being withheld since he is a minor, chose to jump out the window situated on the second floor of the school--about 20 feet off the ground.

The teacher named Chona de Amor supposedly punished the student for failing to wear his uniform last Friday morning. The student happened to be a member of the high school dance group. His mother, who recounted the incident to dxIF Bombo Radyo, said her son asked permission to go home but de Amor refused.

"Niambak na lang ko mosikat pa siguro ko kaysa maulawan ko sa akong mga classmate nga maghubo...akong hunahuna nga kong mamatay ko siya bitaw ang nagsugo (I jumped rather than be embarrassed stripping before my classmates...I thought that if I die she ordered me to do so)," the student said.

Apparently the student survived the jump but not without sustaining some head and body pains.

"Gipangkasab-an pa gyud niya akong mga classmate nga nagtan-aw sa ako kay may man kuno kong artista ko kay ilang tan-awon (She scolded my classmates who watched me jump, telling them that they acted as if they are looking at an actor)," he said.

As he went home the student complained of head and chest pains. His classmates told his mother what happened. Last Monday, the mother asked the teacher whether the incident was true.

De Amor only replied that she was only joking when she offered those choices.

The principal called up de Amor, who then apologized to the mother and paid in part her son's X-rays.

The student said he only hoped that what happened to him won't happen to other students.

Later, Regional Director Dr. Jesus Taberdo of the Department of Education (DepEd) expressed shock on the incident and ordered an investigation into it.

He later told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro that school officials informed him that de Amor supposedly punished the student by locking him inside a room. The student escaped by jumping out the window on the second floor.

After learning what happened the principal then brought the student to the hospital for checkup together with his mother. The student said he didn't feel anything.

Taberdo told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro in a phone interview that he ordered Misamis Oriental Division School Supt. Dr. Elenita Martinez to look into the case. "The results may come this week," he said.
