European envoys assure dev't support to NorMin By Rubelyn Yap
AROUND 11 European ambassadors assured city officials of material support during their two-hour stopover in Cagayan de Oro last Wednesday.
City Hall officials like Mayor Vicente Emano gave a presentation of the city's socio-economic and political profile to the 11 diplomats in a luncheon held at the Xavier Sports and Country Club (XSCC) sometime in the afternoon.
Among those who attended were Italy's ambassador Umberto Colesanti, Belgium's envoy Christian Tanghe, Finland envoy Ralmo Antollya, French ambassador Renee Veyret of France;
Germany's ambassador Herbert Jess, Ambassador Jollo Jose Caetano Da Silva of Portugal, Envoy Ulf Hakansson of Sweden, Britian's diplomat Paul Dimond, Ambassador Stanislav Slavicky of Czech Republic and European Commission official Jan de Kok.
Colesanti said city residents of Cagayan de Oro and the people of Mindanao have their assurance that they will cooperate and work for the full improvement of Mindanao.
"Improvement in terms of achievement in different aspects like economic intervention and economic cooperation," he said.
Colesanti said he asked the ambassador of Britain to make a positive report about Mindanao, specifically Cagayan de Oro which he stressed remained peaceful and progressive due to the unity among Christians, Muslims and lumads.
"Cagayan de Oro is peaceful and progressing because here in the city there are no Muslim, Lumads and Christians in Mindanao only Mindanaoans," the mayor said.
Emano said the only way to attain progress is for Mindanao to be one and to fight for its rights.
The mayor then appealed to the European ambassadors by relaying the collective frustration over their neglect by Malaca¤ang and their desire for peace and progress to their respective nations and national government officials.
"If you will help us out in Mindanao we are certainly developing and attracting investors. There is a need to help one another but if you try to help us out in our quest to progress it would certainly pull as up," he said.
Emano then asked the 11 ambassadors to extend Mindanao a little assistance and understanding.
"Through you we will be able to achieve our dreams and aspirations, if we will work together for the island of Mindanao we will progress," he added.
