Red: Cafes, nice idea By Ellen Red
MAYOR Vicente Emano earlier announced to transform Divisoria into Night Cafes, closing the road from the Amphitheater up to Dunkin Donuts from 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. the following day.
The proposed night cafes in Divisoria is said to be liken to the cafes in Vienna, Austria.
To implement this plan, Emano asked the assistance of the City Council to pass the necessary ordinance.
Also, the mayor recently met with businessmen in Divisoria in order to present the proposal to them and hear what they have to say.
Emano reportedly wants to ensure that these night cafes would not adversely affect the interest of the businessmen in the area.
Clearly, the mayor was influenced by one of his travels in Europe whereby cafes abound.
Indeed, it is ideal to have such night cafes at the heart of this city, the Divisoria. In a visit to Vienna, Austria by this writer, cafes play a big role Vienna's society.
Cafes are not only meant to be a place to drink coffee or beer, not only a place to be seen; but a venue as well for intellectual discussions.
Much as we want to transfer the technology, the beauty of Europe or Vienna for that matter to our city, much has to undertaken still by our government.
For one, in putting up these night cafes, cleanliness must be considered.
One thing that really impresses a Filipino traveller to Europe is its cleanliness. The people there are disciplined not to litter.
Also, the government there has a proper waste management. Solid wastes are not just dumped somewhere but garbage are recycled and waste water are not just thrown into the waterways without waste water treatment.
One only has to visit the “Alacarts” in Cogon to be reminded of the danger of these proposed night cafes.
I am not saying that "Alacarts" are sore eyes to society. "Alacarts" are very much part of Filipino culture as such should be developed by the government.
If only the government could provide these vendors proper ways to dispose solid and water wastes. (comments to ellenred@journalist.com) |
