Flashfloods hit Isla de Oro, Alubijid town folks
By Jenefer Besere

TWO barangays in Alubijid town, Misamis Oriental were struck by a tornado that destroyed some houses last Sunday evening.

This came about even as residents of Isla de Oro Barangay 13
found to their astonishment that their kitchen appliances, items, beds and tables floated on water after days of heavy rains early Monday morning.
The Isla de Oro residents there panicked due to the sudden rise of the water level in their area.

Meanwhile, a family in Barangay Lourdes, Alubijid and 123 families in Barangay Taparak were affected by flooding, bringing the total to 496.
About 15 houses were partially damaged and two were swept away by the flood. Most of the victims were farmers.

Emely Andia, Provincial Social Welfare and Development officer said the flashflood occured after the tornado struck their area.

Andia said the local government there managed to immediately extend assistance to their affected constituents.

No transfer was done since the affected residents went back to their homes after the water level dropped.

"Walay mga casualties apan nabanlas gyud ang ilang mga tanom kay mga mag-uuma man gud ang kadaghanan sa mga biktima (No casualties but their crops were drenched since most of the victims were farmers)," Andia told radio station dxIF.

Andia said the rains started falling heavily last July 2 and it was last Sunday when a heavier than usual downpour struck the area.

Meanwhile, Isla de Oro residents said two days of incessant rains caused the water level in the river to rise at around 2 a.m.

A resident named Mitchelle Locsin said they got scared when the water level rose to their house even if it was located at the uppermost area.

"Kita gyud mi nga nanglutaw ang mga butang laliman ka nga taga dughan gyud namo ang sukod sa tubig (We saw things floating even if it was very deep there was too much water)," Locsin added.

The damage was extensive since the flood also destroyed a bridge connecting them to Barangay 15. The residents there called on the National Government to help them restore the bridge.

"Lisud gyud kaayo kong malangay pa kay layo na kaayo among agi-an molibot pa man mi aron maka-agi (It's hard if it were to be left unattended for long because it would take us quite a distance to pass through)," Locsin said. From Sun.Star Superbalita
