Hapee's `Big 3' up for Misor challenge By Lynde Salgados
FORMER Negros Slashers pointguard Maui Huelar will lead Hapee Toothpaste's five-day showdown with Misamis Oriental Warriors starting July 12 in Gingoog city.
The Teeth Sprinklers, mentored by Jun Noel, also has old mainstays Liodi Garcia and Patrick Benedicto to shore up its frontline against the Warriors built around the top cage standouts in the locality.
"Hapee's roster is still potent as ever. They'll not be called champion in Cebu for nothing," event coordinator Ferdinand Sanchez said of the reigning PBL-CBF titlist.
Completing Hapee's fancied lineup are Reed Hontilla, Marvin Pundag, Marvin Mercado, Adrian Mamba, Dorotheo Almasin, Michael Estrata, Ni¤o Gelig, Robert Giron and Richie Urdaneta.
Out in the brat pack of coach Noel's big guys is Renier Hugnatan who's now playing with Coca Cola Tigers in their ongoing PBA All-Filipino title series with Talk `N Text.
The Warriors placed runner-up to North Cotabato Braves in the Kibawe Open in Bukidnon and finished just third behind Monta¤a Pawnshop and one PBL players-laden squad in the just-held Marawi Open.
But a Misor insider said the province team's real strength cannot be measured in those two separate out-of-town games where the Warriors failed to come in full force.
"I must say that their efforts in Bukidnon and Marawi are half-baked since the team was divided for them to attend their hectic, if not conflicting skeds," a close aid of Misor team-playing manager Andy Calingin told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
Misor will count on Jester Adams, Jerome Numeran, Micmic Culdura, Allan Casi¤o, Eric Abato, Jun Pong, Ernesto Tagarda and Silvon De¤a, among others, in their much-awaited duel with the Cebuanos.
From Gingoog, the Northern Mindanao basketball tour will proceed to Camp Philip, Bukidnon (July 13), Balingasag (July 14), Medina (July 15) and Talisayan, Misamis Oriental on July 16.
