NWPB: Companies should take initiative to encourage productivity
By Rubelyn Yap

LOW wages and benefits are among those cited as factors in a survey indicating a reduction of productivity of Filipino workers from 1997 to 2002.

Regional Deputy Executive Director Rebecca Calzado of the National Wages and Productivity Board (NWPB), however, said these are only part of many factors affecting productivity.

Calzado, who attended the Normin-Prodnet special general membership assembly last Friday at Max Restaurant here in Cagayan de Oro, said the downtrend doesn't mean the Filipino labor force is entirely at fault.

The deputy NWPB director said increasing productivity entails a lot of aspects like the tools, technology and equipments in order to enable the labor force to complete their tasks more efficiently.

Calzada said the company or the employer is the number one factor to sustain productivity as mandated by law.

"Nasa kanilang (It's on their) end to sustain productivity. With high wages, high productivity will be brought in. The employer has the biggest contribution with productivity," she said.

Calzada said they supplement this with productivity trainings to employers especially the small to medium enterprises (SMEs).

"We are concentrating to them since once they will grow it would benefit the two parties. We are very positive of the result," Calzada said.

With the right opportunities and environment, the possibility of receiving high productivity from workers is achievable, she said.

The NPWB official said the best way to ensure worker productivity would be for the company to create and maintain the necessary conditions to encourage worker efficiency.

Calzada said this is why the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board-10 (RTWPB-10) hold trainings and assembly every now and then.

Last Friday's assembly gathered all RTWPB-10 member organizations and it carried the theme "Harmonizing the workplace through productivity enhancement for global competitivenes."

These include those from the industries, labor unions and federations, the government sector and academe to the non-government organizations (NGOs). l
