Lagrosas, Palacio lift Super B-ACCP to 2nd win
By Lynde Salgados

JONATHAN Lagrosas, nicknamed "The Terminator" by Macasandig fans, displayed his defensive antic anew as the Super Balita-ACCP dribblers cruised to their second-straight win on Thursday in the exciting Open League basketball tournament in Barangay 15.

The defensive-minded Lagrosas, who also paced ACCP with 13 points in a thrilling 47-43 escape, tempted Club 24's top gunner Loloy Varga to commit a costly unsportsmanlike conduct that merited one freethrow plus ball possession advantage for Andy Palarca's wards. Enough to erase ACCP's five-point disadvantage midway of the final half.

"Sun.Star's big fighting heart did it again in the endgame squabble. But DongLag's pesky kind of defense did the chief damage to Club 24's momentum. With Varga forced to sit on the bench before the last three minutes, we managed to inch closer en route to a slambang finish," said

Super B-ACCP's bench tactician Lynde Salgados who missed the team's forgettable knockout match in Macasandig against DENR.

"Talagang nagkagulo sila sa ginawa ni Lagrosas. Nadala sa init ng ulo ang kanilang laro," added Manny Calanno of the team's coaching staff. But it was a collective team effort overall.

With Richard Divinagracia, Damian Nacalaban and Yuri Locsin stepping up on offense, the sweet-shooting Nanni Palacio scored four crucial points.

Two of them were converted from the freethrow line that gave ACCP a two-point lead with barely 40 seconds left in the payoff period.

The hot-tempered Varga, who returned to action with a battered pride, lobbed in a desperate three-pointer with time ticking away--but to avail.

"Pilde gyod (We're just beaten)," said Club 24's seasoned playmaker Totsie Daitol, whose pinpoint assists had set the tone for Varga (10), Miralles (14), Laput (6) and Ike Namalata (6) to baffle ACCP earlier with perimeter jumpers from almost all angles.

Nacalaban had a different story, however, for the team's dramatic victory.

"Kadtong gakos sa abnormal na babae ang nakadala'g buwenas. Wala gyod nisangit ang duha ka freethrows ni Nanni (That sweet embrace from an abnormal female fan is seemed to be our lady luck as Nanni's freethrow shots were able to hit nothing but the net)," said Nacalaban.

Locsin, who is Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro's newest editorial recruit, debuted with 12 points as Divinagracia, Palacio and Nacalaban added 9, 8 and 4 markers, respectively.

In the preliminary match for the open bracket, Coop Bank drew quality minutes from Jay Mabaylan, Al Abutanmo, Roberto Go, Ivan Tongco, Opaw Navales and Pacturan to prevail over the Bado Legaspi-led Zone 4 team, 42-37.

Pilgrim high school varsity squad, mentored by Arvin Martinez, also breezed through the opening matches in the midget division.

Chaired by Lourdes S. Echem, Barangay 15's basketball tournament committee officials are composed of Carlos M. Urbina (chairman), Emeterio Villanueva (co-chairman), Bobby Urbina (asst. co-chairman), Tony Lustre (adviser), Emmie Glovel (head referee) and John Cabonialda, Boy Oclida, Normardy Paurom, Robert Cesar and Radi Banaag as members.

Acting as the barangay's SK chairman and treasurer is Ma. Lourdes A. Legaspi.
