City Hall encouraged by night cafe dry run results
By Rubelyn Yap

MORE than 100 people flocked to the streets along Magsaysay park, this city, since last Friday for City Hall's night cafe project.

The project's dry run began at 8 p.m. last Friday with about 42 concessionaires filling up R. N. Abejuela and V. Neri streets along the stretch of Magsaysay park this city.

Mayor Vicente Emano said he is glad that the project turned out better than he expected.

"Though there are many things to do to make it very nice but it was very good turn-out. I will create a committee today that will handle the said project," he said.

He said he was very glad there were many people and businessmen telling him that they are making business in the area and people have asked him to make the cafe a daily activity.

Emano said they plan to put up the 4ID band, a combo and other bands that would serenade cafe habitues this Friday.

The mayor cited a foreigner who told him that he was glad that a night cafe is in Cagayan de Oro because he only saw cafes in his home in London and other European countries.

The mayor said he still wants to put more lights in the streets and extend the area in Bonifacio park.

He said the dry-run will last until next week and that hopefully the cafe will open starting Fridays until Sundays.

Meanwhile Councilor and Divisoria night cafe committee chairperson Maryanne Enteria said she was very happy with the result of the dry-run.

"It is very inspiring. Salamat kaayo sa mga tawo nga nag-suporta (Thank you to the people's support)," she said.

Enteria said there have been many applicants for the cafe spots but because of space constraints only 42 were given chances and the rest would have their time next week.

She said the duration of the dry-run is not fixed. "Kay gatan-awon pa nato (Because we're still monitoring)," she said.

Highlighting the night cafe are the 32 globe lights worth P10 million as well as the P600,000 rope lights lining up the entire Divisoria area.

Emano earlier promised to restore Divisoria's glory days saying the night cafe project would become the first of its kind in the country.

Aside from these developments, the city government also plans to build two modern restrooms in the area with the Operations Kahusay Ug Kalinaw (OKK) Center to be relocated to the Amphitheater.

Also included in the re-development plan is the construction of a "dancing" fountain and a public kiosk which replaces the bandstand area.
