Emano, Barbers back Arroyo govt amid charges
By Rubelyn Yap

EVEN with the myriad threats facing the Arroyo administration, Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Vicente Emano said the government and economy remain stable.

"She has many good programs. I don't believe that what is happening will make the country unstable. The economy is not unstable," he said.

The mayor said the challenges hurled by opposition politicians are nothing more than political gimmicks aimed at undermining the administration.

Emano said this even as he called on every Filipino to support the duly constituted government saying we couldn't afford any more destablization attempts.

"We should work as one. As Filipinos we should help each other despite of our political affiliation," he said.

He even said the call for a snap election by opposition Sen. Tessie Oreta is not right.

"There is no law on that matter. This administration is very different from the Marcos regime and there is no need to call for that since election is just around the corner," he said.

The mayor issued his response after Senator Oreta called on the President "to do a Ferdinand Marcos and call for a snap election.

The woman senator said the President became a "stumbling block" to progress adding that the country is in "turmoil" and "polarized.

She also cited the military restiveness and the administration's continued "pillorying" of the mainstream opposition as further eroding the country's stability.

For his part, administration Sen. Robert Barbers said last week there is no need for a "snap" election since the President is doing well in her job.

"If we go on for a snap election we have to spend P10 billion or more for the expense. We should rather spend it for livelihood of our less fortunate people and increase the wages of our soldiers," he added.

Barbers added that he would rather favor "snap" elections for senator.

"Never mind the president she is doing well. Kami na lang sa senado dahil (Better for us here in the Senate) there were many of us to be removed and let the one working remain," he said.

The senator said the situation right now in Manila is good and the Armed Forces (AFP) is top of the situation.

For his part, Emano said the person who would eventually assume the defense secretary post occupied by Angelo Reyes, should find time to re-organize the organization.
