Pabillore wins bronze in Malaysian karate meet By Lynde Salgados
CAGAYAN de Oro's very own Marna Pabillore reaffirmed her status as one of the country's best female karatedo bets for the next South East Asian Games (SEAG) after a successful campaign in the recent 1st Malaysian Open karate championships.
The 22-year-old Pabillore, a Commerce student at Xavier University, returned home with an individual bronze medal gain in the women's open weight category.
She also anchored the RP contingent's silver finish in the team event of the kumite competition.
According to Victoria "Kakay" Pabillore, Marna's older sister and trusted mentor, her ward would have even reached to the championship round had it not been for the alleged biased officiating.
"The RP karatekas have been complaining that they were not accorded with fair treatment by the technical officials there in Malaysia. In fact, the country's premier bet in the women's division managed just a bronze in the individual kumite," the older Pabillore said referring to the good-looking Christine Malalad.
It can be recalled that Malalad and Marna's much older nephew Joey Pabillore made the country proud in the last SEAG rivalry in Kuala Lumpur when they both emerged gold medalists.
In stark contrast, however, to his previous outing abroad, Joey went home empty-handed from Malaysia.
Marna's devoted trainer and spriritual adviser, however, clarified Friday that her equally-talented sis will not be able to compete for any team in the 3rd Mindanao Friendship Games which will open on October 19 in Mati, Davao Oriental.
"National player na si Marna so disqualified na siya sa amateur level of competition," explained Kakay, who in her prime was also a successful international campaigner.
