Batang Pinoy may add 2 more age brackets By Lynde Salgados
IF UNCONFIRMED reports will not remain as mere gossip, then the country's young athletes outside the 12-under bracket will not be left over anymore in the Philippine Sports Commission's year-round calendar.
This came as city sports consultant Arlito Rivera revealed recently that the annual Batang Pinoy meet for children aged 12 years old and below will be elevated to two more higher age categories.
"I just learned this development some two weeks ago in Cebu and it was Gino (Panganiban) himself who informed us nga naa nay 13-under and 15-under brackets nga idugang sa Batang Pinoy," Rivera said.
"Of course, this is a welcome development for the country's grassroots sports program. Dalaygon kaayo nga nakita ni PSC chair Eric Buhain ang diperensya. Kay after sa Batang Pinoy, asa na man paingon ang 12 and above years old nga mga athletes?" was his charming remarks.
If Rivera's revelation will hold water, the Cagayan de Oro-Misamis Oriental Chess Club will be among the local sports associations that will benefit the most in as far as producing medals for both the province and the city teams is concerned.
Under such circumstances, two-time Batang Pinoy gold medalist Sittie Halia Sabo--who just graduated from the 12-under level--will have the chance to continue her medal campaign in the 13-under class.
Same with Randolph Dalauta, twice BP silver performer and 12-under third-placer in the 2002 National Age-Group Open, who will be back to play in the 13-under boys rivalry.
"Makadula pa sab si Bomik ana," NCFP-10 coordinator Engr. Allan Diez said of his 15-year-old son Boris Michael Diez who emerged 12th-placer in the junior division (20 and below) of the recently-held 2003 National Shell Active Youth chess championships in Manila.
Already, the CMOCC stand a good chance of maintaining its gold harvest in Batang Pinoy with last year's most winningest chess competitor
Richelie "Jongjong" Salcedo III with two gold golds to count for his credit still qualified to see action in the 12-under hostility.
Salcedo's 12-under counterpart in the distaff side Shian Tigulo and 10-under bets for boys and girls Abdul Khalid Musor and Beverliza Bernardo are also potential medal prospects.
Equally-strong are Team CDO's four entries in the 64-square-board battle Raphael Russ Pasimio (12U boys), Patricia Diaz (12U girls), Lennon Hart Salgados (10U boys) and Nicole Diez (10U girls).
