Suspect in Bukidnon brgy. councilman murder yields By Stephen Capillas
THE suspect tagged in the murder of a barangay councilman last September 14 surrendered to agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) 10 at his home in Manubiray, Lampanusa in Kalilangan, Bukidnon, past 10 a.m. last October 7.
Regional NBI 10 director Virgilio Mendez identified the suspect as 22-year old Jopolds Consuelo, a resident of the area.
Mendez explained they were called on by the family of victim Leonito Solas to help look into the case, saying they were unsatisfied with the findings of the Kalilangan police.
Solas's remains were found at the Manubiray River in Lampanusa, Kalilangan, Bukidnon, 6 a.m. last September 14. The victim sustained fatal hack wounds on the neck and body, which led to his death.
Investigation by the Kalilangan Police resulted in the arrest of William Suarnaba alias Egum and Adonis Gulmatico alias Nene. They were detained at the municipal jail of Kalilangan and charges were filed against them.
NBI 10 agent Atty. Ferdinand Balduman and two police officers then went to Consuelo's home October 7 and interrogated him. He broke down and confessed to his involvement in the killing.
During his presentation before local media at the NBI 10 office, Consuelo admitted that he killed Solas because he saw him slapping his sibling.
Consuelo also accused Solas of allegedly ordering someone to kill his father. He surrendered to Balduman's group and then asked for forgiveness from the victim's family.
He said he confronted Solas in a secluded place and then hacked at him in the neck, nearly decapitating the councilman's head.
Despite this, Consuelo expressed remorse and said he hopes the punishment would be reduced after he surredered.
Director Mendez said leniency in sentencing is possible owing to what Consuelo said in "mitigating circumstances." He also said they would recommend that charges against the two other suspects be dropped.
