Work for dev't, 4th ID urges local media
By Stephen Capillas

FOURTH Infantry Division Chief (4th ID) chief Maj. Gen. Cristolito Balaoing over the weekend called on the local media to become partners in development.

During last Friday's media fellowship night sponsored by the 4th ID, Balaoing said all they ask from the local media is fairness in terms of news coverage on their operations.

The official said they understand that media have a job to do in providing information to the public but explained that there are times when they cannot divulge information on operations for reasons of security.

The fellowship night was attended by the city's tri-media outlets. Balaoing in turn said they promise transparency in their dealings both with the public and in their activities.

"So long as they do not concern national security we are available for interviews as the occasion arises. I realize that we are public property and thus accountable to the citizenry. All we ask is that we be treated fairly," he said.

Balaoing also said they realize their accountability in using the limited financial resources at their disposal and that every centavo spent is accounted for.

For his part, Cagayan de Oro Press Club (COPC) President Jerry Orcullo said while they support the military's push for development the media should remain independent and do its job of reporting the truth.

"We should act as critical collaborators with the military because we have a responsibility to the public to report the truth," he said.
