Pimentel: Poe agreeable to federalism, Mindanao projects By Lizanilla Amarga
PRESIDENTIAL aspirant Fernando Poe Jr. accepted Tuesday the nomination of the opposition Koalisyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino (KNP) as their standard-bearer in next year's elections.
This came as Senator Aquilino "Nene" Pimentel Jr., told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro Tuesday that he will be supporting Poe following agreements on some Mindanao projects and the issue of federalism.
"Nagkasabot kami nga ang federalism i-submit (I have already agreed with Poe on the issue of federalism to be submitted) as a constitutional amendment so that it may be discussed more fully by people," he said Tuesday.
He added that Poe has also agreed on funding several projects for Mindanao once the action star sits as president of the country.
Pimentel who is also the chairman of PDP-Laban and comes from Cagayan de Oro city said he will be consulting his members as to whether they will be supporting Poe's candidates in the local political arena.
When asked on whether he will be supportive of Misamis Oriental Gov. Antonio Calingin's gubernatorial bid he replied, "I go along with what local PDP-Laban wants to do."
Calingin is the KNP regional chairman and has earlier announced his support for Poe. He is set to clash head on with First District of Misamis Oriental Rep. Oscar Moreno in next year's elections.
The governor said he is soon to announce the full slate of candidates set to be fielded by Poe and KNP in the locality.
Already there are thousands of supporters in Misamis Oriental and other areas in Region 10 have already signed in their support for Poe in next year's elections.
Poe, a movie actor who is popularly known as FPJ, accepted the nomination in a program held in Pasay City.
Poe's runningmate could either be Sens. Loren Legarda, Gregorio Honasan, Pimentel or former senator Miriam Santiago.
Legarda is seen as Poe's most likely partner in the elections next year, but Mindanaoans are pushing for Pimentel.
He rejected having Sen. Panfilo Lacson, another opposition presidential contender, as his vice presidential candidate. Poe said he will announce who his runningmate will be next week.
