Weeklong downpour displaced thousands in Armm, Caraga: OCD-10

THE regional Office of Civil Defense (OCD) 10 released the list of casualties affected by the weeklong downpour in various parts of Region 10 and the Caraga region.

Officials said the number of families in Region 10 remained at 1,054 with some now returning to their homes. Two dead persons were reported due to drowning in Balingasag town, Misamis Oriental.

In Caraga region, the number of families affected in Agusan del Norte stand at 7,651, followed by Agusan del Sur with 6,344, Surigao del Norte with 1,968 and Surigao del Sur with 4,270 families.

Butuan City had 3,857 families affected by the floodings while Surigao City had 1,021 families affected.

Meanwhile, the number of displaced families in Agusan del Norte stood at 281, with Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Norte having 65 and 300 families displaced respectively.

Surigao del Sur has 4,270 displaced families with Butuan City having 832 displaced families and Surigao City 694 families.

In terms of casualties Agusan del Norte had one dead person named Joven Quivan with Agusan del Sur having four dead persons identified as Lino Paalon, Jr., Mariano Banga, Cornelio Barrios and Sammy Prontreras.

In Surigao City 13 people died while two are missing and seven injured due to landslides in Barangays Rizal, San Roque and Kapalayan. In Surigao del Sur three died in Barangay Madrid.

403rd Infantry Brigade commander, Col. Melchor Dilodilo, said in Initao town, Misamis Oriental two died due to drowning.

He said the Bukidnon to Davao road was closed Tuesday following a landslide the night before but this was resolved by the provincial engineering district allowing vehicular flow to resume there not long after.

Meanwhile, Camiguin Gov. Pedro Romualdo confirmed the young woman found floating at the waters off Mambajao by a fisherman was Paulina Cero Lagang, a teacher of San Ricardo, Southern Leyte.

He said Gov. Rosette Lerias of Southern Leyte called him up and thanked him for the find.

Romualdo said he ordered the Bantay Dagat teams to continue their rescue and recovery operations in the event some landslide victims from Southern Leyte float in their area.

In San Isidro, Balingasag town in Misamis Oriental residents are still searching for the whereabouts of one man and one woman.

The victims were identified as 40-year-old Berna Bacaro and Ambo Acantilado, all residents of the area. The two are said to have gone together in crossing the river in order to reach their homes.

Residents there called it a "killer river" because around 200 people have died there and the weeklong rains. One person said the two tried to cross it but were overcome by the strong current with Bacaro going down first.

The barangay chairman there said he had been warning residents to stay clear of the river so they won't be carried away by the strong current.
