Cabanlas to file libel against Ocon By Lizanilla J. Amarga
COUNCILOR Edgar Cabanlas announced Friday his move to file libel charges against a colleague in the Cagayan de Oro City Council over allegations that he together with other councilors pocketed public funds.
Cabanlas said he would be filing libel charges against radioman and Councilor Zaldy Ocon. Ocon will also be filing charges against the city council this Monday, his lawyer, Frederico Gapuz said.
The legal war arises from the city council's decision to suspend Ocon for 30 days and reprimand him as well.
Cabanlas said he has already with him three affidavits stating that Ocon has indeed accused them of pocketing some of the controversial P100 million loan.
"Bahala na ang uban dili sila mo-file ug kaso basta ako nangandam nako naa na gani ko diri tulo ka affidavit (I don't care if the other city councilors would also file charges against Ocon but I myself would be filing charges in fact I already have three affidavits here with me)," he said over dxCL Angel Radyo yesterday.
He added he is also currently collecting more affidavits to strengthen his case against Ocon.
Cabanlas also keeps his cool over reports that Ocon would be filing disbarment case against him along with lawyers vice-mayor Michelle Tagarda-Spiers and city councilor Maryanne Enteria.
In an interview with Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro, Gapuz said they have already drafted the charges with damages versus the City Council for issuing two resolutions the 30-day suspension and a reprimand on Ocon.
"We are just going over some minor details right now but we will be filing them this Monday at the Regional Trial Court," he said as he showed their petition-complaint.
He added the charges they would be filing this Monday would be an initial step and that "other charges will follow."
Gapuz said they would also claim for damages in thousands in pesos from the city councilors.
Several lawyers have shown sympathy on Ocon's case among them are former mayor Manolo Tagarda and former vice-mayor lawyer Antonio Soriano along with former city councilors Roy Raagas (two-terms), Charie Akut (three-terms) and Constantino Cabacungan (three-terms).
Lawyers Koko Pimentel, Joy Elumba, Bobby Goking and Sammy Aguilar also manifested interest to help Ocon.
