ABL named Rivera, Deña as All-Star game coaches By Lynde Salgados
THEY used to play against each other in commercial games. Now, they're up for a new challenge in taking basketball to a higher level.
Amigo Basketball League commissioner Ardizon Arsua named former MBA playmaker Jaime Rivera and ace pointguard Celbon Deña as rival coaches for South and North in the ABL All-Star Weekend this coming December at the MPSC gym (not XU gym as mentioned earlier).
For their solid credentials in the ABL, Arsua said Rivera and Deña's coaching jobs for the best players in the league will surely make the All-Star event as an exciting one.
"Among gi-evaluate ang mga credentials sa ABL coaches and finally napili namo sila nga maoy modala sa North and South teams for the All-Star Weekend," Arsua told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
With Rivera at the coaching helm, the Camaman-an Crossroads waxed hot early in the Southern Conference with back-to-back wins over Bulua Clay Country and Macasandig Caves.
Deña's Lapasan Sunrisers is also going great guns, even taking the Northern Conference lead with an immaculate 4-0 record.
"Actually, challenging kaayo kang Rivera `ning All-Star game kay naay 6-3 nga power forward si Deña sa North," Arsua said, referring to the versatile Lloyd Cena--who at his advantageous height--can also man the point with relative ease.
Also taking center stage in the ABL All-Star are Ballpals and its Team B counterparts from Subokin.
Prior to that, Arsua said they intend to set a rematch for the warring ballclubs when Barangay Camaman-an plays host to the ABL games on Oct. 29.
"We believe that Ballpals and Subokin can help the league in attracting more spectators because they are both established clubs in the city. We're also looking forward to watch an exciting games among the two of them," beamed Arsua.
Taking the forefronts of Subokin are big men Boboy Sabal, Yangyang Rollan and Jimboy Chaves, court general Mayor Rocky Calingin and the spitfire Balong Lagbas. While the underdog but courageous Ballpals is expected to rely on the ageless pair of Pinggoy Castro and Jojo Batobalonos, bull-strong Lolong Bequilla and slotman Nanni Palacio.
