The celebration is contained in Presidential Proclamation 896 dated October 24, 1986.

A certain parcel of land of the public domain covering Mt. Kitanglad Range as Natural Park and its peripheral areas was declared as buffer zone. Republic Act 8978 dated November 9, 2000, otherwise known as Mt. Kitanglad Protected Area Act of 2000, declared Mt. Kitanglad as full pledged protected area.

The immense richness of its flora and fauna makes it one of the last sanctuaries of the countries natural heritage.

Aside from being the homeland of indigenous peoples (IPs) and habitat to sizeable population of flora and fauna, it is also a major watershed, which provides water for power generation, irrigation and domestic use for the provinces of Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental.
