Former guv's brother to face theft raps anew By Lizanilla J. Amarga
THE brother of former governor Antonio Calingin along with several other loyalists are now facing criminal charges of theft for carting away properties belonging to the Provincial Government.
Provincial Attorney Cancio Nicanor Guibone said the province has now filed Monday with the Office of the Provincial Prosecutor a criminal case for theft against Mateo "Tyok" Calingin, who is the brother of the former governor George Namoc, and four other unknown laborers.
"The filing of this case is consistent with the thrust of the Province of Misamis Oriental to fully account all properties of the people and bring to justice those who have abused, misused or misappropriated them," he said.
"We must remember that the properties of the Provincial Government of Misamis Oriental are the properties of the people of the province," he added.
Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro failed to contact Calingin and Namoc as of press time Friday.
However, a relative close to the Calingins said they have yet to receive a copy of the complaint against Mateo and the others.
Guibone said in a statement that Calingin, Namoc and the four others illegally hauled steel bridge bailey panels from Cabulig Bridge in Sitio Man-ibay, Barangay Aposkahoy, Claveria, Misamis Oriental last July 23 this year.
"The intention to steal and cart away said province-owned properties was so evident when the privately-owned ten-wheeler truck used in the hauling was deceptively marked 'Do not delay Government Project DPWH' on its windshield, so as to evade proper checking by law-enforcers at checkpoints," he said.
But according to Guibone, the carting away of these government properties were foiled with the help of a combined team of concerned citizens and law-enforcers.
This include those members from the Armed Forces of the Philippines 9th Infantry Batallion, Citizens Auxiliary Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU), barangay tanod and a certain barangay kagawad from the Municipality of Claveria.
Guibone said the case is now lodged at the Provincial Prosecutor's Office and that they are now waiting for filing of the necessary criminal information in the proper court.
