Taiwanese nabbed in shabu lab raid
By Joey P. Nacalaban

* Alubijid residents report "stink" from abandoned building
* Taiwanese suspects sleeping inside building housing assorted chemicals for shabu manufacture

TWO Taiwan nationals were arrested by police authorities during a raid inside a building believed to be a shabu laboratory in Alubijid, Misamis oriental, Monday evening.

Police identified the suspects as chemists Su Peter Yu and Lim Anthony Su.

Another suspect, Chua Jack Dy was not anymore inside when the police arrived.

Lawmen tried but failed to get the comments of the suspects since they could not speak English.

The raiding team led by Alubijid police precinct Chief Senior Inspector Rolindo Sugion caught the two sleeping inside an abandoned building owned by a certain Eugene Tan of Agora, Lapasan.

The Mindanao International Concrete Product, Inc. building (MICPI) located at Barangay Longilo of the town, had been vacant for quite some time until people near the area had noticed it was already occupied by foreigners.

On November 30 the residents began to smell some chemicals emanating from this plant and reported this to the Alubijid police.

They also noticed an Isuzu Crosswind and a L300 van in and out of the area.

Barangay officials together with Roy Tumampoc and members of Civilian Volunteer Organization (VCO) then conducted surveillance.

Their observation led them to conclude that something illegal has been made inside thus they applied for a search warrant.

The group secured a search warrant from Judge Ernesto Catola of the Alubijid Municipal Trial Circuit Court (AMTCC).

The raiding team had seen barrels of chemicals in barrels, along with acid, powder and sodium hydroxide.

Also taken were a weighing scale, a Liquified Petroleum Gas tank (LPG tank) and a filter.

Chief Inspector Mary Leocy, Philippine National Crime Laboratory-Region 10 chemist, confirmed that hydroxide is one of the ingredients to manufacture hydrochloride Methamphitamine or shabu.

"Mao kining mga typical na mga kemikal nga makita lamang sa mga illegal laboratory," Leocy said.

Chief Inspector Roque Marban, PNP Crime Laboratory chief, said that if the building is really being utilized for shabu manufacturing then such raid was the first in Region 10.

He said his men already took samples of the chemicals for examination.

Sugilon said cases for violating Republic Act 9165 of Section 8, article 2, better known as manufacturing of illegal drugs, had been readied against the suspects.

He said if Tan would be proven that he has the knowledge of bringing here the two foreigners he would also be included in the case.

As of press time, the suspects are temporarily detained at Alubijid jail pending filing of appropriate charges.
