Retired officers appeal for calm on Poe's burial By Lizanilla J. Amarga
AN ORGANIZATION of retired military and police officers in Northern Mindanao are calling for "sobriety" and "calmness" in the wake of apprehensions that some groups are going to take advantage of the chaos and high emotions that would accompany the burial of presidential aspirant and action star Fernando Poe, Jr. today.
This even as the group believes in preparing Mindanao to be the "alternate location" for President Arroyo to which she can fly to in case of another revolution.
The Retired Armed Forces and Police Officers Association Northern Mindanao, Inc. president, Col. Regino Calub disclosed that they have received some information from their sources in Manila that there might indeed be groups that would cause some destabilization in government.
He said though their group is "apolitical" they can't help but come out with this destabilization plot possibility and call for "sobriety" and "calmness" amongst the people here in Northern Mindanao.
"We cannot just remain indifferent and act only when we are already personally hit," he said during a press conference last night. Calub was accompanied by Col. Rodolfo Rocamora, Col. Napoleon Refugio and Lt. Col. Virgilio Jose who are vice-president, secretary and press relations officer of their organization, respectively.
Calub said it is better for the people here in Mindanao to be prepared for any eventuality rather than be caught unaware such as another revolution.
"There might be another Edsa III or Edsa IV and Manila would again try to install another president...we in Mindanao cannot just accept that we are not a colony of Luzon," he said.
"We must be prepared and open to any possibility including how Mindanao could be the alternate location for the President or for any presidents in the future," he added.
"We would like to add our voice to the call of those who counsel against using the funeral of Fernando Poe, Jr. to destabilize the government," they said.
The group said Mindanaoans should not allow themselves to be so affected by what "imperial Manila" is doing for again it would be Mindanao that would suffer from political torment.
