Transport group, militants mull strike

* Both groups wait for signal from Manila to decide actions
* Transport groups in Manila determined to push through with protests

THE Transport Federation of Cagayan de Oro (Trafeco) and militant groups have yet to decide when to stage their protest actions in light of moves by transport groups in Manila to hold their own rallies on Wednesday, March 16.

The protests stemmed from the recent series of oil price increases.

Partylist groups threatened to march in the streets if government approves the proposed P.50 oil rate increase said to be implemented every week.

Trafeco president Virgilio Valmoria said his group's participation in the March 16 strike has yet to be finalized.

"We are waiting for the signal of our umbrella organization in Manila but we are certain there would be a mass action," Valmoria said in the vernacular.

The Trafeco chairman said their protest actions would be directed against the oil price increase and added that they are demanding anew the abolition of the oil deregulation law.

Bayan Muna regional coordinator Nero Vallar for his part also said their group had yet to come out with a final decision on whether to join the planned mass action.

"There is no final decision yet, we will just make announcements," Vallar said.

However, Regional Director Mandangan Darimbang of the Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board 10 revealed he has not yet received reports of the planned transport strike.

Darimbang likewise voiced concern on the P2.00 fare increase demanded by some of the transport groups in Manila.

He said the increase would not be favorable to the public if implemented in Cagayan de Oro.

And in Manila, the militant party list groups said they will stage a three-pronged protests in the capital.

"Dadanak ang dugo (Blood will flow)," Anakpawis Representative Crispin Beltran said even as he predicted street riots and economic chaos would occur as a result of the oil price increases.

The Palace, according to Beltran, should intervene in the P0.50 oil price increase per week saying this would add to the public's woes.

Beltran calls on the Congress to junk the Oil Deragulation Law. (Jenefer Besere of Sun.Star Superbalita)
