Oro Stars shocks Laguna Five, 98-93
By Lynde Salgados

* With defense specialist Agusan also working on offense

CARLOS Sayon proved his worth as coach Andy Calingin's prize catch from Iloilo, leading the CDO Stars' dramatic 98-93 squeaker over the visiting Laguna Spring Cooking Oil on Saturday's opener of the NBC's pre-season games here at the Acsat gym.

Sayon soared 26 points as local standouts Jerome Numeran, Pocholo Agusan and Boyet Alfeche put their acts together in the killer stretch and seized the momentum for CDO after a dominating start by Laguna.

One of the pure shooters the now defunct MBA league has ever had, Sayon had a perfect combination with the three locals in running CDO's offense.

Numeran and Agusan provided the clutch baskets that neutralized Laguna's bid to pull away from as many as 9-point lead. While the off-formed Alfeche still managed to carry the home squad's struggle in the endgame squabble by canning in crucial freethrow baskets.

"Dako kaayong tabang sa team si Sayon kay athletic unya presko pa kaayo. Of course, there's no doubt nga si Agusan ang best player of the game sa Game 1 kay gawas nga patsada kaayo iyang gipakita nga depensa..naa pa gyoy opensa. Ganahan kaayo si Dong (Polistico) sa iyang style," said Ballpals president Pinggoy Castro, who watched the game from the sideline.

Numeran and Agusan came next with 21 and 19 points apiece while Alfeche produced nine markers all in the second half.

Fresh from a 1-1 deadlock with expansion team Valencia Golden Harvest in Bukidnon, Laguna got twin-digit numbers from Jayson Alminario (16), Mar Reyes (14), Marlon Kalaw (13) and Rodel Manuel (12).

Game 2 was still at play as of presstime with Laguna hoping to even the mini-series.

"Like the CDO Stars, guwardiya ug sentro nga mo-let and go among kulang," said Valencia coach Arvin Martinez who has the troika of Jester Adams, Dino Cabili and Ike Royo in his roster.

How they score:

CDO Stars (98) -- Sayon 26, Numeran 21, Agusan 19, Alfeche 9, Rivera 7, Tilap 6, Padilla 3, Alfante 3, Jaro 2, Jabagat 1, Mendoza 1, Polistico 0. Torres 0, Jimenez 0.

Laguna (93) -- Alminario 16, Reyes 14, Kalaw 13, Manuel 12, Domingo 9, Corbin 9, Vivero 7, Alejar 5, Roda 4, Daleno 3, Nolasco 1, Proceso 0, Lingal 0.
