MisOr tourism won't be affected by division: DOT-10
TOURISM in Region 10 will not be affected by a divided Misamis Oriental.
Regional Director Maria Elena Manolo of the Department of Tourism-10 (DOT-10) said this, explaining that even if Misamis Oriental is broken into two or three seperate provinces it won't affect the influx of tourists.
She said their office would simply market the whole region regardless of territorial subdivisions.
"When we market Region 10 to our local and foreign tourists, we market all provinces within its boundaries so it is my opinion that we will continue to attract more people here despite such a move which I hear is now taking place," Manalo said.
Manalo also said despite security threats in the region, particularly in Cagayan de Oro City, the number of tourists arrival is not affected.
"Although we issue a summary of tourist arrivals in the region quarterly, but I think that more tourists are coming in the region now and that the security condition did not affect our tourism at all," Manalo said.
Additional IRA
She said the DOT-10 continues to monitor arrivals of Korean, Japanese and American tourists in the region.
"And if the Camiguin's annual Panaad were a gauge, then I would say that more and more local and foreign tourists are coming as our staff had witnessed a large number of arrivals there during the Holy Week," Manalo said.
Misamis Oriental Second Dist. Rep. Augusto Baculio Baculio told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro earlier that there is a pending resolution calling for the division of Misamis Oriental into three provinces and three legislative districts.
"This would mean an additional P300 million for each of the provinces in internal revenue allotment (IRA) while an additional P70 million for each of the three congressional districts," he said.
He added that the municipalities of Claveria, El Salvador and Manticao would also be turned into cities with at least P300 million IRA each.
According to Baculio, the second district of Misamis Oriental, which spans from Lugait to Jasaan including Claveria would then be divided into two districts.
The first would be from Lugait to Opol while the second district would be from Tagoloan to Jasaan including Claveria.
"This is to ensure effective administration as it is very impossible to expect one congressman with only 70 million a year to humanly and effectively administrate from Lugait to Jasaan including Claveria," he said.
He added that the requirements for the creation of new provinces and districts include having at least a population of 250,000 and 200,000 hectares.
For turning towns into cities, Baculio said the requirements include having at least a population of 150,000, land area of at least 10,000 hectares and an income of P100 million.
"Our municipalities of Claveria, El Salvador and Manticao may all have not yet achieved the P100 million income requirement but because I have filed the bill in 1998 and the amendment was filed by Senator Nene Pimentel in 2001, hence, our three municipalities are exempted," he said.(Danilo V.
